GOLD JEWELRY WAS ALL THE RAGE 2003-03-09 | 1:10 p.m. You know what’s even more embarrassing than working in a club where Bell Biv Deveau is played, the fact that I went to see them in concert when I was a freshman in high school. Yup, I saw Keith Sweat, BBD, and Johnny Gill all in one fantastical evening at the Arco Arena. Man those were the days. 1989. Purple satin starter jacket. Frosted pink lipstick. Aqua net to hold up my mile high bangs. I was a sight to behold and I’m not exaggerating. I’d put on a little splash of exclamation for that added sex appeal and make my way to school each morning to sneak out of class and smoke pot. Thank god for Lee Charron and his skateboarding friends that ripped me from my hoochie lifestyle and showed me the path to follow was one of open disobedience and general disregard for all things top 40. It’s been about 14 years and every now and then I find myself slipping back into my old ways. I love the big hoop earrings and I do get caught on the R’n’B radio station once in a while but I know now to keep it at a minimum. Everything in moderation. So thank you Lee. And thank you DJ for playing a song that reminded me that I don’t suck as much as I could.
